A teacher assistant friend of mine who works with a group of Walthamstow children said that last week they were sharing & discussing their views of the elections in the classroom.
One of the children said that his father had been given a letter at the local mosque to vote for the Lib Dem candidate Farid Ahmed because he was Muslim.
Can anyone shed light if this is contravene to electoral rules? We know that Liaquat Ali did the same in 2006 at his mosque too, thus helping him to win narrowly at the last election.
Should this be investigated?
Wouldnt know if it contravenes election rules, but making direct appeals to specific sexes or religions is fairly common place. Strictly speaking I imagine holding a womens only election hustings is against equality laws, but would anyone really have any desire to stop it?
I’m sure there are valid reasons for each candidate to claim that muslims, christians, women, gay or straight should vote for them. Parties have distinct policies or past actions that would inform that choice whether its the iraq war, clause 28, b&b’s, married person allowances, etc etc.
At the last election Farid was heckled by muslim extremists

Its also difficult to say much without seeing the letter or knowing if it actually exists?
Well it is a free country and we all have our right to vote for whoever we want in the polling booth. We can agree with letters that are given to us or disagree, this is democracy I would expect muslims to want to vote for people who understand their way of life. I hope they look at wider issues in the country of their residence too, before making their choice.
