Tyre slasher causes misery in Edward Road
Residents in Edward Road are mobilising in the face of attacks from an unknown tyre slasher, believed to live in the area themselves. Over the past few months a dozen or more tyres have been stabbed with a thin blade, resulting in costly replacements of up to £150 per tyre. And it’s about more than the money: it’s affecting people’s families and livelihoods. One resident who has had three tyres slashed reports that he had only been borrowing the car so that he could ferry his elderly mum to and from hospital for chemotherapy to treat her cancer – he is now unable to make her life easier in this way.
The affected cars were all parked in the unrestricted area after the Edward Road CPZ comes to an end. Locals speculate that the perpetrator is a resident who, perhaps, has issues with strangers parking in these spaces to get to the tube. But the cars that have been attacked mostly belong to residents who have a right to park there. Some of these residents have been posting to our forums about this, and if you want to join in you can do so here.
Ramping up the pressure, residents and BAG have been liaising with local police to explore hi-tech ways of catching the culprit and bringing them to justice. Efforts to involve the council in surveillance and countermeasures are also going on.
Meanwhile, we urge all residents to be vigilant and report any sudden and mysteriousflat tyres to the police on 0300 123 1212. It’s also worth contacting Sgt Philip Steedman of our local Safer Neighbourhoods Team on 020 8721 2035 or 07843 291115.
