Crimewatch appeal for Walthamstow “Calendar rapist”

BBC Crimewatch has screened an appeal for information relating to the murder of Michele Samaraweera in Walthamstow on 30 May, she had been raped and strangled. The appeal was screened on the 29 June edition of the show.

Police are hunting a man who is aged between 30-50 years of age who is of Asian or dark skinned appearance, he is believed to have carried out two further serious sexual assaults in the area prior to the murder.

Officers have been carrying out door to door visits to collect DNA samples from men in the area and expect the process to continue for the foreseeable future. So far they have eliminated more than 300 men from their inquiries.

Waltham Forest Borough Commander, Chief Supt Mark Benbow, said:

“Our Safer Neighbourhood teams have been working hard to offer reassurance to the local communities but we do urge women in the area to remain especially vigilant, particularly if walking alone at night.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone who may have information about the suspect or who may have been approached in similar circumstances. Their information, however small, could greatly assist the investigation team.”
